Nairobi, January 30th, 2019… Greenleaf production for smallholder tea farmers under Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) rose 4.4% to 611 million kilos in the first half of the 2018/19 (July to December 2018), amid a 17% drop in tea prices over the same period. Read more.

World Environment Day

Over the last two years, KTDA Foundation has planted more than 2 million indigenous and fruit trees around KTDA managed tea factories in an effort to increase forest cover.
A Sterling Win for KTDA
Region 5 team, led by Regional Operations Manager, Margaret Gachinga (in black top) with some of the trophies won during the recently concluded ASK Nakuru National Show. KTDA scooped first prize in the following 4 categories, among others: The Best Most Striking Display (Locally Manufactured Products); Best Agro-Processing Stand; The Best Display in Data Services & Mobile Services and the Best Local Stand in Strategies of International Trade & Exports.

Big Win at Kenya Exporter of the Year Awards
Big Win for Chai Trading: Chai Trading Company Limited (CTCL), has won two top prizes at the inaugural Kenya Exporter of the Year Awards held on 15th July, 2019 at the KICC. On hand to receive the prizes were Dr Charles Mbui, Managing Director (in the middle) and Michael Mwakio , Business Development Manager(left). CTCL emerged top in the Excellence Based Award in ICT and E-Commerce Adoption, and 2nd Runner Up Overall Winner. The awards solidify KTDA's position as a leading exporter of world class Kenyan teas on behalf of smallholder tea farmers. CTCL provides integrated solutions in logistics, clearing and forwarding, shipping, warehousing and distribution services for all teas grown by smallholder farmers affiliated to KTDA. It is also a leading tea buyer at the Mombasa Tea Auction. Dividends from this subsidiary are paid back to tea factory companies for onward payment to farmers as second payment.
Business Visit By FMO
Region 2 Regional Operations Manager Antony Murithi (left) demonstrates to visitors from Netherlands Development Finance Company (FMO) on how KTDA-affiliated smallholder farmers handpick green leaf from their tea gardens. The guests had visited Gatunguru Tea Factory and Mitumi small hydro power station on July 24, 2019. FMO has partnered with Greenland Fedha to advance credit to smallholder farmers, as well as partly financing development of seven hydropower projects operated by KTDA Power.
Awarding Adopt a Tree Champions
Mr Boniface Kariuki FUM Mungania Tea Factory, with students of Kavutiri primary school during an award ceremony for students who had participated in a tree planting exercise that is being undertaken by the KTDA Foundation through the Adopt a Tree program. KTDA Foundation has planted more than 2 million trees in tea growing areas to mitigate the effects of climate change.

KTDA Wins Top Financial Reporting Award
KTDA Foundation, IKEA Foundation Green the Environment.
Mudete Tea Factory board and IKEA Foundation (Switzerland office) members during a tree planting exercise at Musoli Primary school on November 26. A total of 200 tree seedlings, including indigenous, exotic and fruit trees, were planted. The tree planting is part of a KTDA Foundation- led project to empower rural communities and households with renewable energy. The project aims to have one million trees planted across 12 KTDA factory catchments by November 2020.

Congratulations to KTDA Foundation sponsored YEAR 2019 students who have excelled in their KCSE examinations results. A total of 93 students sat for the 2019 KCSE examination with 86% of the students qualifying to join admission to the university through the Kenya Universities Joint Admission.
